Peter Broetzmann and Heather Leigh Return For New Zealand Tour

Peter Broetzmann and Heather Leigh Return For New Zealand Tour

Thursday 5th October, 2017 11:50AM

Altmusic has announced the return of free jazz saxophone titan Peter Broetzmann (Germany) and experimental pedal steel guitarist Heather Leigh (US), who will be performing as a duo throughout New Zealand in November! Previously touring our shores individually, the cacophonous artists will be tearing it up this time as an improvising duo, their performances together have been described as “an intoxicatingly weird take on the blues". Both artists are famous for being thrillingly LOUD, we recommend bringing earplugs.

Check out our pics of Peter Broetzmann in action from his 2014 visit here and see the full tour info below...

Press release:

Altmusic and the Audio Foundation is proud to present a nationwide tour of reknowned saxophone/pedal steel guitar duo, Brötzmann / Leigh.

Peter Brötzmann is a living legend of improvised music who has embodied the leading edge of the European avant-garde for over 50 years, challenging audiences and convention alike with a relentless intensity. On pedal steel guitar, Heather Leigh is rapidly becoming a legend in her own right, both for her solo work (published by Not Not Fun Records, KSE, and Ideologic Organ among others), and especially in combination with Brötzmann. Since 2015, the two have toured extensively as a duo whose fearless, improvised collaborations have been heralded as “an intoxicatingly weird take on the blues” marked by ferocious speed-of-thought improvisation and deep lyrical soul – each a perfect foil for the other.

This tour presents local audiences with a rare opportunity to experience an exceptional level of musical improvisation which is sure to leave a lasting impression. Both Brötzmann and Leigh have toured Aotearoa as solo artists, and loved the country so much they have returned with their mind-bending duo show.
