Wellington's Zero Cool Share Self-Titled Debut Album

Thursday 2nd November, 2017 2:05PM

Wellington indie-pop group Zero Cool have been making waves with catchy single ‘Yo-Pro Dinner Party’, an appearance at Whammyfest 2017 and now they’ve shared an exclusive stream of their self-titled debut album which is set for release this Friday. The seven song album is a gently-paced collection of melodic jangle-pop, replete with singer Scott Maynard’s witty and heartfelt lyrics. They'll be celebrating the new record with a party at Caroline on Saturday 11th November alongside fellow travellers Heavy Chest and Bad Friend. Listen to the stream below and read on for Maynard’s comments on the origins of the band and their new album…

"The original idea for Zero Cool was to make music that was simple and fun while still being interesting. I wanted it to have attitude, energy, and to sound gritty.

I wrote and recorded the songs on the album over about a year. Trying to strip the instrumental parts back to their simplest forms without losing their function. To me there is a real attitude about playing something really simple that I like.

Lyrically the songs are inspired by fairly typical life stuff - romance/nomance, emotional highs and lows, random but impactful experiences. Trying though to come at these subject matters a more light hearted perspective.

When it came to recording if I did it all myself it would definitely have that low-fi sound I was after. Probably due to my lack of skills and gear. The album features myself (Scott Maynard) on drums, bass, guitar, synth, and vocals. Deanne Krieg who originally played bass in the band sings backing vocals on all but 'Do You Wanna'. Al Green (of Groeni) mixed, and Brad Boatright mastered.

The live band is myself on guitar and vocals, my brother Matt Maynard on drums, and Symon Palmer on bass.”

Zero Cool's self-titled debut album is out Friday 3rd November via Ball Of Wax.
