Premiere: Ghost Wave Share Single 'Reputation' + Remixes

Friday 9th March, 2018 11:38AM

Auckland purveyors of buzzed-out jams Ghost Wave (aka Dr Billy and Malcolm S.) have unveiled their latest collection of tunes, a five track EP featuring single 'Reputation' and remixes by New York artists The Vacant Lots and New Zealand producers Frank Booker and Julien Dyne  As with their previous single 'Heaven', the new song is mixed by UK psychedelic explorer Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3. It's the second in a series of collaborative collections with cash from downloads being donated a good cause, as the band states "all profits from your purchases will go toward an organisation helping prevent the suicide of young people in New Zealand." We caught up with Dr Billy who lifted the lid on the duo's new recordings...

"This new ones called 'Reputation' and it grew out of this little sketch I made a while ago after we released 'Radio Norfolk'. We wanted to do something really reduced in terms of all the changes, kinda making it this thing that morphed around a really simple melody line. A lot of my friends had switched to using Ableton to record and I thought I might jump on the bandwagon, it hasn't really lasted and I'm back to tracking usually but I was really psyched on its effects units. The songs basically about being true to yourself in those times when you're not sure which way to go, which has been a recent theme for me. It's super repetitive which is something I'd wanted to do for a while, kinda like a chant or mantra or something like that. I feel like it's kinda a chirpy track but underneath it there's this feeling of not feeling completely right and I like to document these sorts of moods and feelings in songs.

We reached out to The Vacant Lots for the remix who are a NY band that I've been into for a while, I feel like we fit into a similar lineage of being rock n roll devotees, and then also reached out to Frank Booker who we've gotten to know over the past year or so. He was starting a new project with Julien Dyne and we are so happy with how the remixes turned out. I think was the first thing they work on. I don't have a clue who's doing what, but I know Brandan Haru contributed some keys and Julien's drums are completely live. Looking forward to working on some more stuff with these guys in the future. We're super happy to be sharing this new release so thanks for listening. See you soon!"
