Premiere: Auckland's KTN Share Debut EP 'Cake / Walk'

Wednesday 14th March, 2018 10:24AM

Auckland duo KTN (pronounced "kitten") combines the creative talents of Lukas Hanson from fizzy alt-pop unit Pixels and Alex Guthrie of tubertechno-affiliated electronic project ALCS into one futuristic package. They've now unleashed their studio-based tinkering into the wild, in the form of their debut Cake / Walk EP, four songs of light-as-a-feather robo-pop and intricately constructed beat-based sonic adventuring. We caught up with Guthrie who lifted the lid on the duo's new collection, read his words and listen up below...

"This EP is a slow effort that we have produced over the last two and a half years. Me and Lukas started working together through Pixels and both recognised a mutual affection for melody and each other's talents. We were a part of a small online community called tubertechno, which was put together to promote music production and this is one of the results that in a sideways way came out of those two projects.

'Cake / Walk' has become a collection of songs trying to capture ecstatic, celebratory as well as sombre feelings from the last few summer's past. They are embodied in four songs which explore different dance orientated motifs and use of production. The use of vocals aims to give the tracks an extra layer for listeners to connect with and loosely align the tracks with a pop sensibility. All the songs have gone through so many different iterations but these were the four that we liked best and really wanted to share."
