Premiere: Wellington's DEAF Unveil Intoxicating Single 'Shards'

Thursday 19th July, 2018 9:37AM
Wellington post-punk / dream-pop artists DEAF have shared their powerful second single 'Shards', hot on the heels of their attention-grabbing debut 'Truancy'. The new song walks a tonal tightrope between ominous rhythmic grooves and uplifting guitar jangle, while droning synths and Luke Kavanagh's crisp vocals coax listeners into DEAF's swirling world of sound. Featuring members of Sunken Seas and Tiddabades, the five-piece are poised to strike with their first collection being slated for spring, a video for 'Truancy' on the way, and shows lined up for Auckland and Wellington in September. Singer / guitarist Kavanagh discussed how the band's latest work draws inspiration from the crooked dealings of US “pharma bro” (and Wu Tang Clan fan) Martin Shkreli...

"'Shards' is probably the newest song we've come up with and was partly inspired by Martin Shkreli being sentenced earlier this year. His arrest kickstarted a chain of thought about drug companies and our reliance on them and medication."

DEAF are playing at Wellington's Caroline on Friday 21st September, and Auckland's Wine Cellar on Saturday 29th September.
