Jonathan Bree Announces New Zealand Tour

Thursday 26th July, 2018 8:00AM

Auckland pop stylist Jonathan Bree is taking his acclaimed show on the road for a four date tour of New Zealand this November, in celebration of his captivating new album Sleepwalking. The former Brunettes helmsman orchestrated a tremendous lead-up to his record's release, Bree's mysterious masked band's performance at The Others Way 2017 was a highlight of the multi-venue event for many, while his self-directed clip for 'You're So Cool' drew accolades from TimeOut New York, who declared that Bree is "100% the boldest and weirdest music video director working today." The inimitable artist's third studio album gazes through the kaleidoscope of Western pop history to conjure an eerily spellbinding package, teeming with hidden depths and special guests including Princess Chelsea and Clara Viñals (Renaldo & Clara). Bree's band will be in peak form, returning to Aotearoa right off the back of an extensive tour of Europe (plus Seoul) - here are the New Zealand tour details...

Press release:

With his love of psychedelically-tinged 60’s chamber pop and stark, dissident lyricism JONATHAN BREE and his faceless band will take the 2018 Sleepwalking album on tour throughout New Zealand this November.

Jonathan Bree’s third solo album, Sleepwalking was released in June 2018 via the artist / producer’s own label, Lil’ Chief Records. It saw the emergence of the mysterious masked band - who first appeared in his music video for ‘Weird Hardcore’ (from second album A Little Night Music) - who suddenly caught everyone’s attention with Jonathan’s self-directed music video for the release of ‘You’re So Cool’.

Like his previous two albums, Sleepwalking has a heavy orchestrated element featuring real strings, celeste and soprano vocals, but on Sleepwalking Jonathans darker utilities of pop music take these sounds to an eerie and more unsettling landscape.

Sleepwalking features a number of duets with other musicians notably Chelsea Nikkel (Princess Chelsea) and Clara Viñals (Renaldo & Clara) in Bree’s more Gainsbourg inspired pop songs. The album sees Jonathan successfully dip in and out of the avant-garde on 'You’re So Cool', 'Boombox Serenade' and 'Plucking Petals' and effectively walk the line between knowing pop music and well... the just plain weird on 'Static' and 'Sleepwalking'.

Fresh off the back of a 23 date of the U.K, Europe and Korea the November Sleepwalking tour will see "The Master of Misery" perform in New Zealand for the first time since 2017s' Others Way Festival. Joined by his faceless band, audiences will get the chance to hear album singles such as 'Fuck It' which topped the 95bFM charts in June 2018, 'You're So Cool' - Time Out New Yorks, best music video of 2017 as well as ' Valentine' and 'Say You Love Me Too'.
