Princess Chelsea Unveils Single 'Wasting Time' + Video

Monday 6th August, 2018 9:38AM

Auckland internet hitmaker Princess Chelsea aka Chelsea Nikkel (Hang Loose) has unveiled 'Wasting Time', the second single from her keenly awaited third studio album The Loneliest Girl, accompanied by a nostalgia-tinged clip stylishly shot on super 8 footage by director Anastasia Doniants. The song's lyrical themes tie directly into the title of her record, the artist sings a scolding commentary on the seemingly frivolous way everyday people go about everyday lives, while slyly reflecting on her own solitary and time-consuming work / life balance.

Princess Chelsea is celebrating the impending release of her new album with a rare four date national tour in October and November. Currently in the thick of an extensive run of shows in Europe, the artist kindly shared a few thoughts direct from the tour van on 'Wasting Time'...

"Wasting Time is a diss track, it's me being all judgy and next gen. Like feeling insecure about people just enjoying themselves and having a good time chilling on K Rd. Meanwhile I'm working real hard and like being a shit friend.

I don't necessarily agree with the sentiment but it's a sentiment I have sometimes, born out of jealousy and insecurity. The music video is shot by my friend Anastasia on super 8, I think we cleared out the available local supply for a few weeks! We had ten minutes of film and she directed and operated the camera then edited it - it's her first music video. We wanted a lot of bright colours and to continue with the 'floral' theme of the album art.

By now people might realise I like to present a sugar coated image sometimes when singing about darker stuff. So that's what this vid is doing. I'm kinda dressed as people's perception of me "da princess, wonderful princess." Lol.

We ran out of light and had no lighting so at one point we parked up three cars and used the headlights as lighting. Then my friend Matt grabbed a flashlight and we used that on a field somewhere which helped to create a pretty iconic shot which was used as the single cover. There was an old French 1920s film called one red shoe which used a similar technique. Some of the super 8 was expired film which created some crazy effects on some of the shots like what appears to be lightning in the sky at the graveyard. In the digital age it's sometimes exciting to wait and see what footage you end up with when you're experimenting and those happy accidents are often the best shots. I got told off for walking around in a field of cows but I had to ignore it and keep mincing around because we only had limited film and that stuff is gold!"

'The Loneliest Girl' is out Friday 7th September via Lil' Chief Records.
