Him Unveils Hypnotic Single 'I Eat'

Monday 13th August, 2018 11:19AM

Auckland-based aural explorer Him (aka Jazmine Rose) has shared an ethereal and beautiful single titled ‘I Eat’. The track is built around dense synth chords and a hypnotic drum pattern, with subtle layers weaving in and out of the song’s wider aether while Rose’s otherworldly vocal melodies gracefully unfurl amidst the sonic storm. The artist shared some sapience about the song’s meaning and creation...

“‘I Eat’ is a swirling in grief, an underwater cry. A misfit trying to hold hands with language but perfectly fits in with street dogs. ‘I Eat’ is a gift of permission to myself and a "get well soon" to those drowning in bad medicine. Fingers crossed we wake up and step into tomorrow.”

“I recorded the "beat" in my bedroom using a drum machine and my Micro Korg synth which is different as I usually tend to write with my guitar. i found it to be less noisy and more exposing. The vocals I recorded in a little concrete room in India at Morni Hills healing artist residency and the sample at the end is a little boy next door crying because he said the sounds made him frightened. He was a very sweet boy.”

You can catch Him along with Vincent H.L. and Dick Whyte at Wellington’s Valhalla this Wednesday 15th August.
