Hopetoun Brown + Carnivorous Plant Society Five Date Tour Announced

Monday 3rd September, 2018 9:06AM

Horn-tooting Auckland duo Hopetoun Brown are teaming up with multi-dimensional five-piece Carnivorous Plant Society for a whiplash five date North island tour in October. Both collectives have sparkling new albums in their back pockets - Hopetoun Brown's Don't Let Them Lock You Up and C.P.S.'s The New King - they'll be cramming as many members and instruments into one vehicle as possible for the trip, which will see the groups sharing bandmates in two mind-bending musical configurations. Each unit is famous for bringing the house down with their roof-rising, foot stomping tunes, Hopetoun Brown's Nick Atkinson lifted the lid on the groups' upcoming adventures...

"I really want to emphasise how much the bands will fuse with each-other over two distinct sets for these shows. Tim (Stewart) will sing a couple of Carnivorous tunes from The New King and we'll beef up the horn element making Carnivorous a six piece for a fair chunk of the set and then Al Deverick and Finn (Scholes) will hop in and out of Hopetoun's set too which will make it all pretty bangin'. It'll be a big welcome back for Finn Scholes too after his Andes traversing Amazon swimming adventure through Peru, Bolivia and Columbia. He's taken a pocket trumpet Don McGlashan gave him so he can blast the locals on the shores of Lake Titikaka on a daily basis. We're all really missing him at the moment as he's become the glue that holds all of these acts together and I feel the town and K Road are really starting to miss his horn and organ skills!"

Press release:

Oh my gawd this has never happened before! Two freaky bands heading out on the road together in a giant vehicle overflowing with unusual and wonderful instruments. There\'s a tuba as big as jeep and a trumpet smaller than a bean! There\'s a bass clarinet made in Paris and an electric piano constructed in California! We\'re going to need a huge trailer just for the exotic percussion and drums....but this show is about the people, seven unbelievable musicians mixing and mingling throughout a night of mind-bending performance. Siobhanne Thompson, from Carnivorous Plant Society, will beguile you as she coaxes surreal tones from her violin, stopping only to beat out an arpeggio on her enormous vibraphone. Band leader Finn Scholes, arguably the finest trumpet player in the land, will fill the hall with licks from jazz heaven and then Hopetoun Brown will bring the house down as they stomp and parp their way into your heart. This will be an unmissable night of music as two bands perform in a myriad of combinations during two distinct and varied sets pulling repertoire from their combined discography as well some rarely heard songs from further afield. Not to be missed!
