“cements Ebony Lamb’s standing as one of the country’s coolest, most sultry voices" The Listener
Eb & Sparrow, formed around the vocals and songwriting of frontperson Ebony Lamb, continues to strike on with their distinctive self carved niche, creating a soundscape that is at once spacious and lush, nuanced alt-country with a wallop of retro soul. It’s as if someone discovered a secret portal into the worlds of Lucinda Williams and Catpower and the best way to get there was to let Ry Cooder drive.
There’s a spaciousness in the grooves that sit behind Lamb’s voice. Wide open space, harbouring the land and delivering it back again.
Flanked by Bryn Heveldt (lapsteel, electric guitar), Jason Johnson, (electric guitar, bass, backing vocals), Chris Winter (trumpet, melaphone, electric guitar, bass, backing vocals) and newly instated drummer Justin Barr provide the strong textures around Lamb’s guitar and voice. Her songs are the ship, the instrumentation and arrangements lap at the sides, surging everything forward, onward.
Think Cowboy Junkies, Gillian Welch, Jesca Hoop, tunes that stir deep in your soul. Listen to the lines, there’s something deeper, sometimes a little darker, but it is always good. Having wooed audiences the country over, earning an enviable reputation amongst their contemporaries, critics and music fans alike, Eb & Sparrow’s latest is their greatest and that’s really saying something when you remember the response to their last record.
