Lineup Announced For Nostalgia Festival 2019

Christchurch's summer just got brighter with the news Nostalgia Festival 2019 have announced a trans-Tasman lineup including Fremantle roots duo Mama Kin Spender and Melbourne blues-rocker C. W. Stoneking, along with local dub / reggae icons TrinityRoots, Auckland guitar-pop heroes The Beths, award-winning alt-country crew The Miltones, Dunedin indie hotshots Soaked Oats and more. Kiwi favourite TrinityRoots is set to bring waves of nostalgia to Christchurch when it leads a Trans-Tasman lineup for the Garden City’s favourite boutique music festival in February. Cassels & Sons Nostalgia Festival founder Johnny Gibson says he’s delighted TrinityRoots has decided to bring their unique Aotearoa sound and energy to the festival. “TrinityRoots has been providing the soundtrack to New Zealand summers for almost two decades and so many of us will have very fond memories come back to mind when they take the stage,” Gibson says. “There’s no better way to see TrinityRoots play: outside, in the beautiful Christchurch summer sun, surrounded by a very special place full of history.”

Nostalgia Festival takes place every year at Ferrymead Heritage Park’s 1990s replica township. 2019 marks six years since then-25-year-old Gibson founded it as a way to bring more vitality to Christchurch summers. The daytime boutique festival, nestled among old buildings at the foot of the Port Hills, is unlike any other in New Zealand with its focus on providing a family-friendly atmosphere and exceptional offering of great food, drinks, and craft beer from festival partner Cassels & Sons. This year, for the first time, the lineup comes from beyond just New Zealand. Two of the main acts, Mama Kin Spender and C.W Stoneking, will be bringing their sounds from across the ditch.

Hailing from Melbourne, the Mama Kin Spender duo has been playing its unique set all around the world over last year. “They’ll make you dance wildly one moment and give you goosebumps the next,” Gibson says. “Their Nostalgia show will be truly special because we’ve organised a little surprise homegrown accompaniment. C.W Stoneking is no stranger to New Zealand fans of Queen of the Stone Age; he opened for them throughout their tour here in August this year. Stoneking, who’s amassing millions of views on YouTube, is something of a revivalist. His take on blues is timeless and he needs to be seen live in person to be believed that his albums are, in fact, not just recordings from the 1920s. TrinityRoots, Mama Kin Spender and C.W Stoneking will be joined by The Beths, The Miltones, Holly Arrowsmith, Adam Hataway & The Hunters, The Butlers, Soaked Oats and more.

As with previous years, Nostalgia Festival 2019 will place a huge emphasis on sustainability and punters are encouraged to bus or cycle to the festival. “The best and most fun way in from town is to join the group Slow Roll Bike Ride,” Gibson says. “In previous years, we’ve had more than 150 riders take part and it’s the perfect way to get into the festive atmosphere while doing something good for the planet.” All cups, plates, and cutlery are reusable and the team at Our Daily Waste works with festival vendors to minimise and control festival waste. “Nostalgia’s values are simple,” Gibson says. “Our goal is to create a unique festival that brings the Christchurch community together to celebrate collaboration, creativity, great food and drink, quality music and sustainability.” “Nostalgia aims to create maximum enjoyment with minimal environmental impact. We’re continuously working towards implementing and trialing new sustainable initiatives so we can all enjoy a special day without burdening the planet.”
