Premiere: Dark Divinity Unleash Single 'Set in Stone' + Video

Wednesday 5th December, 2018 9:48AM

Rising force in New Zealand metal Dark Divinity have unveiled their powerful and ominous latest single 'Set In Stone', accompanied by a menacing clip directed, shot and edited by Amber Beaton. Described by the North Island-spanning metal crew (featuring members of Into Orbit) as depicting "the awakening of an ancient evil presence on earth bringing about the apocalypse," the aggressive single is the first to feature new vocalist Jolene Tempest (ex-Bulletbelt). Beaton's stunning video ushers in our impending doom via casting the band unleashing their sonic fury in midst of a sinister magick ritual. Dark Divinity are celebrating the unholy birth of their audio-visual creation with their very first headline show at Wellington's Valhalla this coming Friday, and will be subjecting Gisborne audiences to their merciless frenzied riffage at Smashfest this summer. We caught up with the band's Ian Moir about their latest single and impending musical plans...

The video looks and sounds amazing, were there any specific visual inspirations for your clip?

We basically let the director Amber Beaton take the lead on the clip. We know she consistently does amazing work and dabbles in the kind of occult and esoteric themes that really lend themselves to our style of music. The clip is a simple performance video at its core, but Amber and Jolene worked together to come up with her character as osteomancer to give the video some personality.

What was the collaborative process like working with Amber Beaton?

Really enjoyable. She brought a lot of experience, creativity and vision to the project which led to a super efficient shoot. She pushed us to put a lot of energy into the physical aspects of our performance. One thing I really like working with Amber is that she’s straight to the point and does not mince words… at one point during the shoot she told me “you look bored”, and to try to embody the intensity of the music more. That was a bit of an eye opener for me and I try to keep that in mind when I’m on stage now too.

What has Dark Divinity got planned for 2019?

We’re celebrating the release of 'Set in Stone' this Friday at Valhalla with our first ever headlining show. We’re also booked to play Smashfest in Gisborne in January which we’re really looking forward to. A full length album is in the works too, we’ll hopefully have more news on that and perhaps an NZ tour early next year.

Dark Divinity are playing with Ovus and Akashic Index at Wellington's Valhalla on Friday 7th December, for tickets and more info head over here.
