Premiere: Laura Lee Lovely Shares Dance-Pop Single 'Lights Down'

Friday 7th December, 2018 9:40AM

Christchurch electronic pop artist Laura Lee Lovely has followed her attention-grabbing recent Eden EP with beat-driven new single 'Lights Down', which we're excited to premiere here. Written and recorded by the artist with local producer Jagā (Ben Hunt), the spellbinding tune is the first shot fired from Laura Lee Lovely's debut full-length solo album, dropping in 2019. The ex-O'Lovely leader has been busy with a variety of projects in her Canterbury home base over the past year (including playing support for Tash Sultana and a contemporary dance collaboration with The Output Project), and has some creative tricks up her sleeve to unleash in 2019. We caught up with Laura Lee Lovely for the lowdown on 'Lights Down' and her upcoming plans - read her words, listen an exclusive stream of 'Lights Down' and check out a dazzling accompanying promo clip for the song below, directed by Maarten Schrader...

"'Lights Down' is the first song that I started working on after the release of my EP Eden (2017). Eden was a rather eclectic EP for me and off the back of this, I really wanted to write a straightforward pop song. I’m a big fan of synth driven vocal music, and I’ve forever been influenced by female electronic artists (Robyn and Grimes to name a few). I felt empowered to write a song that makes me want to dance and this track definitely embraces that feeling for me.

I collaborated with producer Ben Hunt (Jaga) on this track, and from a production point of view, we wanted to create something that was still spacey and dream-like to stay true to my sound, but wanted to give it a dance twist. My album (due out next year) is going to be on a similar wavelength to this song.

I released my EP ‘Eden’ just shy of a year ago now and since then my music has shifted gears and progressed into something much more dance driven. I’ve played a bunch of shows throughout NZ supporting amazing touring artists like Tash Sultana and Chelsea Jade, and also recently played at the “The Output Project” which was a show combining contemporary dance with my music. Two of the dancers feature in a video created by Christchurch artist Gemma Syme for 'Lights Down', that’s something special that I can’t want to share with you too."
