Jess Cornelius Unveils Single 'No Difference' + Video

Thursday 21st February, 2019 2:04PM

Wellington-raised, Los Angeles-based songwriter Jess Cornelius (Teeth & Tongue) was recently in Aotearoa for her first hometown show in seventeen years, playing alongside local heroes French For Rabbits. The expat artist's debut solo collection Nothing Is Lost made significant waves when it dropped in 2017, garnering praise from such international tastemakers as NYLON and Tone Deaf magazine. Cornelius has finally followed up that release with her standalone single 'No Difference', an infectious reflection on rebirth and change written while she was preparing to uproot her life from Melbourne to LA. The new song comes along with a gorgeously minimal video directed by Thomas Hyland, featuring Melbourne friends and acquaintances of the artist. Cornelius explained the ideas orbiting her new clip...

“We wanted to introduce the water element because of its cleansing / rebirthing properties, but water is also destructive, and the image of someone wearing a white suit in a full bathtub implies someone slightly unhinged... We wanted to expand on this idea of rebirth by showing all these women having miniature moments of self-reckoning, which is what I feel people often do in the bathroom. We use the bathroom—and the bathroom mirror—to collect ourselves, to recover, to psych ourselves up, to escape, to self destruct, to castigate ourselves, to tally up our worth, to make deals with ourselves, to re-evaluate, to preen and primp and steel ourselves.”
