Keith Flint of The Prodigy Dies Aged 49

Tuesday 5th March, 2019 10:55AM

Keith Flint, the unforgettable face of UK dance music titans The Prodigy, has died aged 49. Flint was discovered and pronounced dead by police in a home in Brook Hill, North End just after 8.10am on Monday (local time). Prodigy leader Liam Howlett stated on Instagram: "The news is true, I can't believe I'm saying this but our brother Keith took his own life over the weekend. I'm shell shocked ... angry, confused and heart broken."

Keith Flint's energising work as frontman, dancer and sometimes vocalist for The Prodigy saw the rave music group rocket to the top of international music charts, their hit-yielding mid-nineties albums Music for the Jilted Generation and The Fat of the Land were at the forefront of popular culture, and their 2018 record No Tourists returned the group to the number one spot on the UK album charts. Flint's ubiquitous pierced visage represented the rise of dance music culture in the nineties, he was in New Zealand just last month touring The Prodigy's new album with a headline event at Auckland's Trusts Arena.

The Prodigy shared a statement on Flint's passing, saying "It is with deepest shock and sadness that we can confirm the death of our brother and best friend Keith Flint. A true pioneer, innovator and legend. He will be forever missed. We thank you for respecting the privacy of all concerned at this time."

Keith Flint's work with the Prodigy continues to resonate with an emerging generation of electronic artists. Auckland's Satin Sheets shared his respect for Flint on social media, saying "RIP Keith Flint of The Prodigy. I have been listening through the Prodigy discography almost everyday for the past year - Keith’s energy and presence will forever be remembered. Fun fact: Keith was a character in Supreme Snowboarding on PC that I got in a cereal box age 5".
