Neil & Liam Finn Share Video 'Where's My Room' Ft. FAFSWAG

Tuesday 5th March, 2019 12:24PM

Father and son musical duo Neil & Liam Finn have returned with a mesmerising seven minute video for their single ‘Where’s My Room’, created in collaboration with South Auckland-based LGBTQI+ Pacific Arts Collective FAFSWAG, and drawn from the pair's 2018 album Lightsleeper. Directed by Sam Kristofski with choreography by Walters Prize nominated artist Pati Tyrell, the clip combines sharp movements and destabilising cuts with gorgeous, vividly lit imagery, conjuring an unmoored sense of space as a complement to the lushly arranged tune. Fantastically styled FAFSWAG members roam empty hallways while the Finns dwell in a nervy red-lit interzone (which looks to be located at Auckland's Civic Theatre), before both parties bust musical and dance moves in a luxurious performance space in the video's dramatic concluding sequence. Continuing the theme of collaboration, ‘Where’s My Room’ features instrumental contributions from Connan Mockasin, Kody Nielson (Silicon, The Mint Chicks, UMO), the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra and Elliot Finn.

FAFSWAG spoke about the themes of the new audio-visual work, stating "As a collective of social and cultural misfits, Where's My Room really speaks to a sense of belonging and the precarious nature of home and place. The search to belong is something we feel every generation of Indigenous people are constantly trying to mitigate with Aotearoa's colonial past. The opportunity to work with an iconic family of artists embedded in the fabric of New Zealand's popular culture, helped to orientate the work of our collective and helped to bring us closer to a broader understanding of history, connection and belonging. For us this work saw two families coming together to tell a story about home. We're all so honoured by the collaborative trust and hope everyone enjoys it."

Neil Finn talked about the the inspirations for the collaboration,"I’m been lost a few times in hotel corridors forgetting what room I’m in or even what floor I’m on, What began as a simple account of this feeling became a lyrical rumination on how unique and mysterious we all are and how everyone is just trying to figure out where they belong. Our family are so delighted to have the generous support of such a creative Collective of performers FAFSWAG to show us new ways to inhabit space, to inspire and lead us forward to our own self-discovery"
