Radiohead Release 18 Hours Of 'OK Computer' Outtakes
UK avant-rock icons Radiohead have made the bold move of officially releasing a whopping 18 hours of outtakes from their canonical 1997 opus OK Computer, following a hacking incident and alleged blackmail attempt which saw the material emerge online last week. Described as "only tangentially interesting. And very, very long" by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, MINIDISCS [HACKED] will only be available for 18 days on the group's Bandcamp page, with proceeds going towards climate change resistance movement Extinction Rebellion. Local fans of the band are certainly spoiled for options this week, as members of Hawkes Bay post-rockers Jakob are joining forces as Hail To The Thieves to play a selection of Radiohead favourites at Wellington's San Fran this coming Saturday.
Jonny Greenwood expanded on the circumstances behind the massive release on Twitter, stating "We got hacked last week — someone stole thom’s minidisk archive from around the time of OK Computer, and apparently demanded $150,000 on threat of releasing it.
So instead of complaining — much — or ignoring it, we’re releasing all 18 hours on Bandcamp in aid of Extinction Rebellion. Just for the next 18 days. So for £18 you can find out if we should have paid that ransom.
Never intended for public consumption (though some random clips did reach cassette in the OK Computer reissue) it’s only tangentially interesting. And very, very long. Not a phone download. Rainy out, isn’t it though?"
The outtakes collection is accompanied by a statement from Radiohead on their Bandcamp page...
"we’ve been hacked
my archived mini discs from 1995-1998(?)
it’s not v interesting
there’s a lot of it
if you want it, you can buy the whole lot here
18 minidisks for £18
the proceeds will go to Extinction Rebellion
as it’s out there
it may as well be out there
until we all get bored
and move on
Thmx"
Hail To The Thieves are playing at Wellington's San Fran on Saturday 15th June, tickets are available HERE via UTR.
