Tāmaki Makaurau genre-blenders Wukong the Monkey King 悟空 have busted out a senses-expanding creation in the form of their nine track new album 21st Century Time Travelling. The follow-up to 2017's Planet Chur 烲坤 (featuring student radio fave 'Ode To Keen / 踊跃颂'), the collection pours such diverse elements as funked-up groove worship, psychedelic riffage, meditative jazz-infused meanderings and alternately soulful and punchy vocals (in English and Chinese) into a magic cauldron bubbling with uncontainable energy – red hot numbers such as 'Solar Power' and 'Who' deliver the goods and more. You can catch the group celebrating the release of their time travelling opus at a special event at the Audio Foundation this Saturday for Fluid Borders, “a cross-border, cross-media, cross-frequency live experiment in manipulating the boundaries of real time” linking together live performances in Auckland and Chengdu, China.
