Billy Hoyle New Zealand Headline Show Announced

Billy Hoyle New Zealand Headline Show Announced

F. / Tuesday 1st October, 2019 10:00AM

Melbourne DJ and producer Billy Hoyle will be bringing his unique blend of stunning selections and turntable mastery to Auckland for one night this October. Half of hip hop duo Man Made Mountain, the wax-spinner and tune-crafter purchased his first pair of turntables after seeing renowned DJ (and long time Will Smith collaborator) Jazzy Jeff play in 2004 and was musically marked after finding himself in a Rio basement, surrounded by vintage Brazilian records on a round-the-world adventure. The artist has since achieved a musical “full circle”, with Jazzy Jeff dropping Hoyle’s toe-tapping remix of the Jackson 5’s ‘I Want You Back’ at his Philadelphia Boiler Room set in 2017. Hoyle has also received nods for his original production work, having fielded the beats for Illy’s ARIA award winning album “Bring It Back” in 2013.

Supports for the evening’s dancefloor destruction include Aotearoa hip hop icon Tom Scott (who contributed to ‘About Love’ on Hoyle’s 2019 opus Bruxo), dance-jazz deity Julien Dyne and Sister Rosa, who turned heads at this year’s instalment of the Titirangi Festival with her eclectic and excellent record collection. Press release:

Buying a pair of turntables & a mixer after seeing DJ Jazzy Jeff perform in Melbourne around 2004, Billy Hoyle began studying the art of turntablism & mixing, collecting music and playing a few gigs around town in the following years before a round-the-world trip landed him in a Rio basement, surrounded by vintage Brazilian records. Coinciding with his foray into beat making and production, Hoyle began incorporating these sounds into his music, leading to a Jackson 5 remix which was played serendipitously by Jazzy Jeff at his Philadelphia Boiler Room set in 2017. Having resided and guested in various bars & clubs around Melbourne, Hoyle’s focus on production has strengthened in recent years, producing on Illy’s ARIA award winning “Bring It Back”, reworking a 60’s Brazilian record that landed airtime from Gilles Peterson, and currently as one half of hip hop duo Man Made Mountain on Melbourne label House of Beige.
