Dead Little Penny Share Debut Album 'Urge Surfing'

A.K. / Wednesday 13th November, 2019 10:37AM

Dead Little Penny have released their debut album Urge Surfing and it is a stand out shoegazey dream, unravelling tracks equal parts sincere and cynical. The Tāmaki Makaurau three-piece, fronted by singer and songwriter Hayley Smith, have been slogging away at the stunning collection, which Smith says took about "three times longer" than expected because of the personal and complex nature of the song crafting. The work shows, and Urge Surfing is a highly cohesive and polished release, mixed and mastered by Murray Fisher (Goodshirt, Voom) and fleshed out by band members Simon Buxton and Sean Martin-Buss. Treat your ears to nine-tracks of glorious fuzzy shoegaze, and secure your spot at Dead Little Penny's album release show this Friday with local shredders Créme Jéan and The Feastie Boys.

Hayley Smith on creating Urge Surfing: "Writing and recording this album was quite a toil. It took about three times longer than we’d intended, not only because of the writing and re-writing, but because as a whole it’s pretty personal to me. The past few years of my life have been a real journey – learning about myself, growing, sometimes faltering, and I’ve really been looking inward and trying to move forward towards a better quality of life. For me, Urge Surfing explores my own mental health battles – specifically thoughts I have, stages I go through, and the waves, ebbs and flows that come with that”.
