Press release:

As we head into the new year, Newtown Festival is rolling up and gathering momentum for another brilliant event on Sunday 8 March. The massive free festival takes over the main drag in Newtown, welcoming friends from around Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington and Aotearoa to party with the locals. Riddiford and its side streets will be activated with over fourteen stages, nine activity zones, 450 stalls, and six participating venues.

A tremendous effort in gathering over 120 acts from Newtown and beyond make up a fabulous lineup to join already announced headliners Tiny Ruins, Louis Baker and Mara TK. From the well-loved and critically-acclaimed, to compelling up-and-comers, to the sharing of vibrant community activity, we present the lovingly curated Newtown Festival 2020 performance programme.

There are also some very special but secret guest appearances, who will be announced closer to Sunday 8 March 2020.

Newtown Festival kicks off with a mihi whakatau at 9:30am with mana whenua and Newtown School’s Te Kapa Haka o Te Kura o Ngā Puna Waiora on the Tangata Whenua Stage. Then the performance programme officially begins at 10am on the rest of the stages, with final acts finishing up on the side streets by 9pm. Afterparties continue at local venues Bebemos, Newtown Social Club, Black Coffee, The Office, Baobab and Moon, with their lineups announced in the new year.

Newtown Festival is the largest free music festival and street fair in Aotearoa. Newtown Festival 2020 will mark its 24th year as a street festival, and 26th year as a celebration of the suburb, beginning more modestly in Carrara Park.
