Carpark Records Share Covers Compilation Ft. The Beths, Popstrangers
Happy 21st birthday Carpark Records! To soften the blow of the sobering realisation that people born in 1999 are in their twenties now, the label has a gift for us — No Cover: Carpark's 21st Anniversary Covers Comp. Like a metaphorical key to the Carpark home, they welcome us in to a feast of reimagined tracks from their fantastic roster, including Aotearoa's The Beths, Popstrangers and Introverted Dancefloor each making contributions. Fresh from a sold out country-wide tour, Tāmaki rascals The Beths feature thrice on the comp, once with US songwriter Johanna Warren putting a gloomy, folk spin on 'Happy Unhappy', again with a spacey remix of 'Less Than Thou', and finally, their own cover of fellow NZers Over The Atlantic's 'Starsign' which is very very good. Rituals Of Mine take on Toro Y Moi hit 'Girl Like You' and give it an uptempo electronic twist, likely alluding to Carpark's beginnings as an alt EDM label. Other highlights include a crisp pop cover of Cloud Nothing's 'Hey Cool Kid', a disco-fied 'Ordinary Pleasure', and Dent May's dreamy take on Beach House's 'Saltwater'. I vote for this to be the new 21st tradition and we scrap the yardies and the shots. Sick merch too...
'No Cover: Carpark's 21st Anniversary Covers Comp' is out now digitally and on vinyl in March 2021.
