Womb have a way of writing songs that make you feel confided in, but still you've only just scratched the surface of a story that goes all the way down. The Pōneke trio's latest song 'Dust To Dust' was recorded during lockdown in April, with all three siblings sending tracks back and forth between their separate bubbles, an exercise that helped them stay connected to each other in an inarguably lonely period. Even the song title suggests something bigger than what you're let in on, maybe they're vowing to stick together from ashes to ashes, from 'Dust To Dust'. "I dreamed away the distance between us" is painfully relatable to anyone with loved ones overseas, and is a poetic follow-up to their last single 'Used To Be', which seemed to speak on a relationship gone wrong as a result of getting too close. Vocalist Charlotte Forrester leans into her soft rolled Rs on 'Dust To Dust', with percussionist Georgette Brown holding down cyclical toms and dragging her feet through a slow-and-steady build, playful Haz Forrester synth tones, and acoustic guitar. As the second release from their forthcoming sophomore album, I'm now fully preparing myself for half a dozen more new ways to feel sad...
