Experience Ligeia's Immersive Single / Video 'THE SECOND BURNING'

Chris Cudby / Thursday 28th January, 2021 12:43PM

Launched today via ever-adventurous Pōneke-based collective Sonorous Circle, 'THE SECOND BURNING' is the first release this year from Taranaki-born artist Abigail Daisy Wells' interdisciplinary project Ligeia. Composed around slowly shifting layers of time-stretching drones and deeply reverberated, spectral vocals, the immersive 20 minute track is accompanied by beautifully haunting, recently unveiled visuals created by Berlin-based artist Anna Winslow — and can be experienced as an audio-visual work via YouTube and / or as a sound-only piece via Ligeia's Bandcamp page.

Ligeia shared these words on 'THE SECOND BURNING'...

"THE SWAMP
Pulled through deep waters In a dream screams are song, there is surrender

THE DIRT / TO DIG
To touch the earth, to disrupt and break particles

To use song and sound as portals to explore the divine darkness, what lay within.

Encompassing the unknowing, the agnosia. It is not a process of diving into the void with hand covered eyes for this would insinuate a mindlessness. But rather, with closed lids unravelling the self, unwrapping. An undoing of the tightly sewn veil. To undo is to dig for something buried, something once known then lost or forgotten.

But also, maybe it’s not about the divine darkness it’s about the different selves which I see swimming in the that place. Drawing out a voice, for a time, even if that voice doesn’t know it can speak."
