Adam Hattaway And The Haunters Share New Album 'Woolston, Texas'
Adam Hattaway and The Haunters had already won me over with the album title Woolston, Texas alone, and now that the whole glorious ten tracks have landed I'm obsessed with how perfectly matched the title is to the sound. For context, Woolston is a happy little Eastern Christchurch suburb, home to Cassels & Sons Brewery, the familiar stench of gelatine production, and premium band practice space / recording studio The Dog's Hit Factory. The Texasness shines through on the album's beefier tracks like ballad 'Big Night', or when Hattaway's charming vocals shift from wavering soprano to velvety Lou Reed moments in 'Wasting Our Time', and of course with 'Cuarenta Y Cinco Formas' — a song sung entirely in Spanish. The Woolston of it all is in the tragedy-meets-comedy-meets-romance energy that inexplicably bubbles up through every song. Maybe that's something detectable only by those of us who've lived and breathed the Woolston lifestyle, or perhaps it's a projection of my own memories of the lovably stinky suburb, like an old family dog that's seen you at your very worst but loves you anyway...
Ahem. The Haunters lads hit the road next month to spread the new tunes far and wide. Here's where to find them, and scroll down for Woolston, Texas — the perfect soundtrack for a Friday arvo kickback...
