Soft Plastics Share New Single 'Loozer'
It's been an all-killer run of releases since Te Whanganui-a-Tara's excellently named Soft Plastics arose from the ashes of Beatcomber in early 2020. The team of Sophie Scott-Maunder, Jonathan Shirley and Laura Robinson's standalone fourth single 'Loozer' has arrived, starting with a hushed intimacy that recalls the stop in your tracks wonderment of their student radio hit 'My World / Your Girl', then steadily ramping up energy to a grandly fuzz-frazzled conclusion. Recorded with Lochie Noble (Transistor) and Oli Devlin (Hans Pucket), the filmic scale of Soft Plastics' new song belies its humble DIY origins, with tracks laid down in Robinson's flat before being polished off by engineer James Goldsmith. Soft Plastics are celebrating the launch of their mini-epic with tour dates throughout Te Ika-a-Māui in April and May. Tackling the time honoured theme of rolling the dice on life, Scott-Maunder revealed 'Loozer' was one of the first songs the trio wrote together...
"Loozer was one of the first Soft Plastics songs we wrote... Thematically and lyrically, the song is about self-sabotaging situations and making decisions based on wants rather than needs. When I wrote 'If I let this pass me by I could win some or I could lose you' I was reflecting on short term gain vs long term pain and whether it’s worth sacrificing something you know very well for a stab in the dark. I was really keen to add some guttural screams after the breakdown that was reminiscent of Mitski or Phoebe Bridgers. There is no real resolution to the song so the screams were a perfect way to release the tension and add an additional layer of distortion."
