Listen To Paperghost's New Album 'Bright Eyed Sparrow'
Pōneke multi-instrumentalist Zach Webber is really putting the 'ghost' in Paperghost with his haunting new album Bright Eyed Sparrow. Maybe it's because I watched the existential crisis-inducing film Black Bear last night, or maybe it's just that Webber has a knack for vivid, sonic world building, but this album emotionally transports me directly into a dark scary forest. The album's song titles alone are enough to send your imagination down a winding path - 'The Sound of Knuckles Cracking in the Roots', 'You're Going To Wake Them Up', 'Her Teeth Were Silhouetted As The Sun Slid Down Her Throat'. Each track is huge, and sounds like Paperghost set up an entire orchestra in a spooky cave with a string section, marimbas and pan flutes, but mostly otherworldly instrumentation that I can't quite put my finger on...
