Troy Kingi with Delaney Davidson 'Black Sea Golden Ladder' Tour Announced

Chris Cudby / Friday 4th June, 2021 8:00AM

Two of Aotearoa's most celebrated songwriters, 2020 Taite Music Prize winner Troy Kingi and Arts Foundation Laureate Award recipient Delaney Davidson, are teaming up to tour the nation together in August and September. They'll be regaling audiences with songs from Kingi's forthcoming album Black Sea Golden Ladder, the fifth studio long player in his ambitious and wildly successful 10 10 10 Series (10 albums in 10 years in 10 genres). Written over an intensive four day period with Davidson, who also also plays a variety of instruments on the record, Black Sea Golden Ladder finds Kingi embracing a folk musical palette and considering the various stages of life. He says "It is the most personal of all my albums – the first one I feel that is truly about me."

To say these collaborative shows will be a rare treat for gig-goers is an understatement indeed. Don't miss these two incomparable artists at the following dates, and scroll downwards to experience their video for Kingi's tender-toned new single 'Sleep'.

Davidson spoke of the songwriting process,“Troy wanted these songs to be about the human experience. What is life? What are the things people unite over? The common threads that weave a life together. I started asking him what his thoughts on these times were; fatherhood, love, work, childhood etc. I was trying to get to the essence of what he thought, we always started by talking and stripping it back to get to the core of the message.”

Kingi says "...Delaney took it on himself to be somewhat of a shrink, digging deep into my memories, deep into my subconscious to find my own experiences of these different facets which in the end led us to this album Black Sea Golden Ladder."

A collaboration with award winning artist and producer Delaney Davidson, this album was written and recorded as part of the Matairangi Mahi Toi Artist Residency in Wellington – a partnership be-tween the Governor General and Massey University that was established in 2016 to encourage and promote the development of Māori and Pasifika visual arts and creative practices.

As artist in residence Troy had the opportunity to live as a guest in a cottage at Government House and also to be involved in workshops and outreach programmes with secondary & tertiary stu-dents.
