Flying Nun alum Jay Clarkson (The Expendables, Breathing Cage) has 2021 under control, with a fresh pair of tunes out now via Aotearoa underground imprint Independent Woman Records, plus a new album named Falling Through in the works. Recorded in collaboration with Ōtepoti all-stars The Containers, including Mike Dooley (Snapper, Toy Love, Pop Up Toasters), Alan Haig (David Kilgour & The Heavy 8s, The Chills, Verlaines) and Tenzin Mullin (Suka), Clarkson has shared meditative visuals for the beautifully organ-inflected 'Wakey Wakey World' — the origins of which sparked a renewed wave of creativity for all involved, as she explained...

"Good ol’ Creative NZ cultural grants had meant I was part of gigs in New York and then in Glasgow and Edinburgh in 2013 and 2016 respectively and while these were truly great experiences to be honest it had gotten to where I wasn’t writing any new songs — not since the release of my third solo album SPUR in 2015… Then a musician friend, David Glynn, who in 2017 was living round the corner from me in Waikouaiti, said one day: “Write a song, Jay. Go on, you know you want to.” And so I wrote one (Wakey Wakey World). I figured it would be good to hear a band do this song so I got a few musicians together. Turned out we enjoyed playing together so much we carried on and I got back into writing songs and thus the Containers was formed. That’s how it happens and then you start writing for the band. Well, that’s how it goes for me — but I had needed that initial nudge."

You'll have to move fast to hear Jay Clarkson & The Containers' second new tune 'Tangled Up & Bleeding', presently only available on strictly limited lathe cut 7" disc backed with 'Wakey Wakey World' in a micro edition of 40 — order your own copy via Flying Out right HERE...
