Listen To Grecco Romank's Debut Album 'Red Tower'

Chris Cudby / Friday 9th July, 2021 2:25PM

Sometimes you witness a band perform live and you become instantly obsessed. For many Tāmaki Makaurau gig-goers over the past nine months, the object of that obsession has been "post-empire themed dungeon power techno" trio Grecco Romank — whose eldritch chemistry has attracted a devoted cult following for their party fuelled bangers, wild on (and off) stage antics and jaw-dropping outfits. Sounding like they've emerged from a week-long bacchanal in a top-secret subterranean super city night club (perhaps located in or near Parnell), the team of Damian Golfinopoulos, Billie Fee and Mikey Sperring fuse together electronic elements including EBM, Industrial and Eurodance into Cronenbergian new shapes designed to set dance floors alight — with the operatic Fee and the growling Sperring being one of the most spine-tingling local vocal pairings since Fiona McDonald and Chris Matthews of the Headless Chickens.

Writer and fellow muso Michael McClelland (of Centre Negative fame) lays it all out in the liner notes for Grecco Romank's avidly awaited debut album Red Tower, which is out today digitally following a low key cassette-only run. Hit play on Red Tower, go see them at The Others Way 2021 and score yourself and / or a loved one Grecco Romank's exclusive limited edition perfume Leathery Coward via the band's Bandcamp page HERE (comes with a free copy of the album too) — described as "Tobacco, sandalwood and leather combine in a heady reek of citric cowardice, to cut through the dancefloor like an egg-bound breakdancer".

"Grecco Romank built upon the outsider dance foundations of Auckland’s underground fringe, piledriving into the same land they had earlier reclaimed in former projects like club-fugs STRESS CADET, gunk-punks The Drab Doo Riffs, and Bib Kids. Grecco Romank was a staircase’s worth of co-conspirators that included filmmaker Damian Golfinopoulos, classically trained singer Billie Fee, and former bus driver Mikey Sperring. Their shared musical grammar just happened to be one in which Snapper rhymed with the KLF, in which Negativland wrote all their own songs, and in which Vangelis tapes sold for three hundred dollars instead of three dollars. (Just as great cities come from great cultures, great bands come from great bargain bins)." —  Michael McClelland
