Listen To Drop Zone's New 'Body Double' EP

Chris Cudby / Monday 12th July, 2021 10:38AM

Tāmaki Makaurau duo Drop Zone have followed up their exceptionally swish 2020 debut album with a brand new EP entitled Body Double, showcasing four tunes inspired by Mariah Carey's classic 2008 banger ‘Touch My Body’. We here at UTR always assume covers and reworks come from a place of love, and indeed Drop Zone's Indira Neville (The Biscuits) and Garry West (Dean) confirm their release is "not novelty or ironic", drilling deep into their pop-cultural source material to unearth four gloriously inventive sonic excursions. The booming 'Touch my mutant body' is a locked-groove mantra for chrome-plated androids, 'Touch my piano' dishes up dreamy pop ambience for celestial realms, 'Hunt you down' feels angular and urgent, and closer 'Oh yeh' sounds like galaxies colliding inside my mind. Out now digitally and on limited cassette release via Ōtepoti imprint Long Slow Comfortable Screw Against the Wall, Drop Zone have also shared a fab minimal animated vid for 'Hunt you down' from the EP. Watch and listen below, go see them play at the super city's Flying Out store this Saturday 17th July for Record Store Day, and scroll downwards to hear Garry West's recent solo album Through the looking glass, self-released at the beginning of May this year...

“This song has long been my guilty pleasure but I decided to come out of the Mariah closet and confessed my love to bandmate Garry. The song is actually really beautiful, a simple repetitive gentle restrained backing track with some dodgy funny lyrics” - Indira Neville
