The Subliminals Announce Auckland Headline Show

The Subliminals Announce Auckland Headline Show

Chris Cudby / Tuesday 13th July, 2021 9:38AM

Performing as part of the all-mega lineup for Flying Nun's 40th Anniversary extravaganza, The Subliminals have announced a limited capacity headline event at Tāmaki's The Wine Cellar, to satiate the thirst of fans for their mind-bending sonics. Blazing their own trail propelled by future-gazing motorik rhythms and psychedelic guitar wig-outs, the four-piece made their mark with 1999's The Crystal Chain EP and the trancelike soundscapes of their 2000 debut album United State, which has been reissued on heavyweight 180g black vinyl via Flying Nun. This will be an exceedingly rare chance to experience an extended set from The Subliminals in an intimate setting, who promise they'll "play their best tracks, and will explore them in ways not seen before." Score a copy of the vinyl LP and cop a swish Subliminals tee when you join them on their journey into the unknown on 31st July...

Press release:

Often described as “an accident, a beautiful accident” the Subliminals were always heavily reliant on the eccentricities of its four members. The band merged the classic Flying Nun DIY sound with a futurist minimalist aesthetic and Krautrock inspired backbeats.

The Crystal Chain E.P (1999), presented a unique sound and energy that effortlessly traversed the following decades. United State (2000) soon followed and offered a long-playing entry of the ‘less is more’ ethic. The band eschewed rockist clichés and held onto their warm but stark vision. This teetered on an essential and delicate rhythmic synergy shaped beside a droning parade of dirty, phase shifting guitars with scattered vocals, both cerebral and serrated. Live, their delicacy became tethered amidst a tranquil psychedelia of shimmering aural landscapes and brutal, searing frequencies. At their best, the Subliminals offer a portal to a trance-zone, creating a neo-ritualistic site and an opportunity to dance like tomorrow never happens - repetition unfolds in organic layers and unifies the band, the audience and the spaces between the atoms alike.

The Subliminals were together a short time and widely regarded as one of the most furtive acts in the Flying Nun stable. United State was re-released on vinyl in 2020.

To celebrate 21 years, for one night only at the Wine Cellar is a chance to see an extended set in an intimate setting. The subliminals will play their best tracks, and will explore them in ways not seen before. Come prepared to journey into the unknown.

Limited numbers only. t shirts and vinyl available on the night.
