Tiny Ruins To Collaborate w/ David Mitchell (Cloud Atlas) For WORD Christchurch 2021

Tiny Ruins To Collaborate w/ David Mitchell (Cloud Atlas) For WORD Christchurch 2021

Annabel Kean / Wednesday 4th August, 2021 1:31PM

As is the story these days for many creative collaborations, Tiny Ruins' Hollie Fullbrook and multi-awarding winning British author David Mitchell (author of Cloud Atlas and Matrix 4 co-writer!, not the 3Ds guitarist) linked up over lockdown, and got to work on a project they've aptly titled If I Were A Story And You Were A Song. For this year's WORD Christchurch festival in Ōtautahi the two wordsmiths will perform each other's works in brand new ways, with Mitchell beaming in via video from Ireland for Tiny Ruins-tinged readings, sharing the result of taking five of Fullbrook's most popular tracks and turning the dial from folk song to short fiction. Fullbrook will be holding the fort at Christchurch's James Hay Theatre at the Town Hall, singing new songs inspired by three of Mitchell's unpublished short stories.

WORD launches mid August and runs for just over a week, with Mitchell and Fullbrook's one of a kind offering one of the last in a hugely varied and lengthy list of exciting events. Also in the WORD realm of interest for UTR readers is the sold out Kā Wai O Tahu, featuring Marlon Williams, Ariana Tikao and Ruby Solly performing songs written in response to the water of Te Waipounamu. On Friday 27th Judah Band and The Byllie Jean Project are on the bill for Confluence, providing musical offerings along side a slew of the country's top indigenous writers and poets.

Where and when else but at WORD 2021 are you going to see Hollie Fullbrook performing unreleased songs alongside one of the writers of Matrix 4? Get yourself a ticket asap, and explore the rest of the wonderful week of WORD below...

UPDATE: Due to Covid-19 restrictions, WORD 2021 has been postponed to the new dates of 10 to 13 November: "Despite having to postpone due to the COVID outbreak and lockdowns, we’re committed to celebrating books, storytelling and ideas in Christchurch, and we’ll announce our revised lineup soon. As much as possible, we will keep events from our original programme intact."
