Joe Sampson & Friends Share New Album 'Unfinished I'

Annabel Kean / Thursday 12th August, 2021 2:42PM

When you share your talents with as many bands as Joe Sampson does, it's no wonder he's built up a collection of abandoned recordings and demos over the years. Today the Ōtautahi multi-instrumentalist of T54 and The Dance Asthmatics offers up Unfinished I, a collection of "unfinished (but pretty much finished)" songs recorded during Salad Boys album sessions. Long time band mate and Melted Ice Cream top dog Brian Feary features throughout the album, providing tasty, crashing percussion on just about every track, save for tight and tidy moments on 'Consideration', 'New Softy' and a handful of others.

As expected on a compilation of loose ends and extra bits, the Sampson and friends sound varies wildly, making for an exciting, palpitating listen when 'Parental Disapproval' pipes in with buzzy synth, and instrumental opener 'Carelessly' features a Ben Woods bass cameo. Sampson says he's deep in the clear out, planning to "wade through years of harddrives and things" — listen here to the very welcome spring clean discovery Unfinished I...
