Adventurous listeners have been gifted with two collections in a new series from Aotearoa experimental champions iiii Records, helmed by sax innovator Jeff Henderson. Volume one of Experimental Guitars of Aotearoa, subtitled A Feast of Tones, showcases the sounds of pioneering Ōtautahi string wrangler Greg Malcolm (Surfing USSR) in an expansive improvisational pairing with percussionist extraordinaire Chris O’Connor (The Phoenix Foundation), recorded live at Tāmaki Makaurau's Audio Foundation in mid-2017. The creation of Mexico-based Aotearoa experimentalist Misha Marks, volume two Grisly Finds was recorded from late 2014 to early 2015, presenting eight textural sound-works wrought from various forms of prepared guitar. Both volumes are a treat and a half for those willing to open their ears to the unknown, chow down below and if you're in the South Island or nearabouts next week, we recommend you head along to the Ōtepoti / Dunedin's first ever Now! Here! This! festival of uncompromising sounds— head over here for details.
