Moana & The Tribe Share Single / Video 'Āio Ana' feat. Mari Boine
Moana Maniapoto (Te Arawa, Ngāti Tūwharetoa) and The Tribe help kick off Te Wiki o te Reo Māori / Māori Language Week with new te reo single ‘Āio ana’, a collaboration with Sámi vocalist Mari Boine (Norway). Recipient of the 2019 Classic Record for her trailblazing, politically-charged work with the Moa Hunters, Maniapoto's atmospheric latest release with The Tribe is set to appear on their forthcoming album Ono, a six ('ono') song collection launching in 2022 and aiming to "celebrate and raise the visibility of endangered indigenous languages". A serene sonic meditation to inspire peace, the lyrics for ‘Āio ana’ were written by Scotty Morrison, with Maniapoto and Paddy Free (Pitch Black) creating the tune's dreamy ambient beat-scape, and Boine contributing traditional Sámi joik vocalisations. Directed by Paddy Free, watch the golden-toned accompanying video here and scroll downwards for the lyrics to ‘Āio ana’ with English translation below...
ĀIO ANA - LYRICS - (S.Morrison, P.Free, M.Maniapoto)
Āio ana te rangi
Let there be calm across the heavens
Āio ana te whenua
Let there be calm across the land
Āio ana te ao katoa
Let there be calm across the world
Āio ana te moe a te kuru pounamu
Let there be calm as this precious jewel sleeps
I roto i te māī
Cradled within
Te matihere
The great affection
Me te māoriori e
And the serenity
Kia au, kia au, kia au te moe
Wrapped in the mist of sleep
‘Āio ana’ feat. Mari Boine is out now on major streaming services.
