Jordan Rakei Unveils New Album 'What We Call Life'

Annabel Kean / Friday 17th September, 2021 3:19PM

London via Aotearoa jazz / soul / RnB innovator Jordan Rakei's fourth full length album What We Call Life is out today via Ninja Tune — a project approached with the conscious decision to shift from songwriting that "had been more like commentary" to a new level of personal, honest and open song craft. Along with the album drop, Rakei has been steadily drip feeding his three-part What We Call Life mini series, confronting the three facets of his artistry: The Voice, The Producer and The Ego in bite-sized episodes you can watch below. The videos take a snapshot of the album-making process, for which Rakei and his collaborators set up camp in a remote studio in the Welsh countryside. Although literally created from a distance, the recordings capture Rakei up close and vulnerable on the new LP, weaving through therapeutic revelations on his childhood, marriage and phobia of birds. From opening track 'Family' on which he explores his relationship with his parents, to the flighty and unpredictable nature of 'Wings', Rakei lets his guard down. Step into the eccentric beats and lush soul of What We Call Life...

Here's the three videos documenting the album record process...
