Listen To Mokotron's 'TAWHITO' EP
Self-described as "DARK PROBLEMATIC TRAUMA-DRIVEN MĀORI ELECTRO BASS STRAIGHT OUTTA TĀMAKI MAKAURAU," Mokotron's new TAWHITO EP is essential listening for your Friday. Bringing together sounds of taonga pūoro (traditional Māori musical instruments) with subterranean club sonics geared to move bodies into action and rattle your cranium, the producer's seven track collection innovates thrilling new shapes from oceanic electro / breaks-driven componentry — declaring: "Indigenous Bass Revolution imminent." Mokotron discussed the kaupapa of the EP over on Instagram...
"Tawhito, meaning ‘ancient’, is an exploration of Māori ancient futurism that imagines a reality without colonisation, where the ancestors transition from the ancient world into the modern world to create futures of hope. Tawhito combines vintage synths and drum machines with the ancient voices of pūoro (traditional Māori instruments), karakia (chants) and mōteatea (songs of lament), complemented by the artwork of Manaia Toa / James Paratii Lainchbury (www.ntkstudio.com).
Shout out to all the DJs, selectors, radio stations and podcasts for supporting my music over the last year, spread this to the four corners of the universe!"
