Part of the all-star cast showcased on Sunreturn's new See You On The Horizon compilation, Baby Zionov aka Aaliyah Zionov welcomes listeners to dreamland with 'PJ Princess', the first tune revealed from her just-announced forthcoming album Henrietta. Featuring vocals by Moody V. (Madison Van Staden of Babyteeth, Van Staden & Böhm, Moody V. & The Menstrual Cycle), 'PJ Princess' feels not unlike how a slumber party should sound in contemporary club contexts — cosy, comfortable and able to blast holes in speaker cones via depth-charge bass, lite 'n' spacey synthetic pulses, itchy / scratchy breakbeat action and a refreshing touch of rustic guitar strum. Included as a digital B-side, the Tāmaki electronic artist's 12" club mix stretches the good times out to eight and a half minutes, a sonic smörgåsbord to enjoy until the ten track record drops on 1st July...

"PJ Princess was put together in a haze at some point deep into Auckland’s second lockdown last year" says Zionov. "I think I was trying to make a grime tune, but at some point my conscious mind basically checked out and some kind of dream logic took over.

The track is a stream of consciousness you can dance to, the beat is put together with all sorts of weird sounds and ephemera that were occupying my mind’s ear at the time. It probably shouldn’t work on paper, but Maddy’s gorgeous, wistful voice, and her lyrics about the bittersweet comfort of being alone, tie it all together so perfectly. I think the end result is really lively!

It's a song about giving yourself space to breathe, so I think it’s only fair to give the song itself some space to breathe with this extended version. Extended mixes are a bit of a dying art nowadays but I love them because they let you fully immerse yourself in a song and appreciate it from different angles. Each of the different elements of the sound-world get a little more time to themselves here — the groovy bits get to groove out more, the vibey bits get to vibe out more, and the sad bits get to sad out more." - Baby Zionov

'PJ Princess' featuring Moody V. is out now on major streaming services via Sunreturn.
