Port Chalmers icon Nadia Reid is teaming up with contemporary classical ensemble NZTrio for a very special three date tour in July. Journeying to Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Ōtautahi and Ōtepoti, these collaborative events will showcase new arrangements commissioned from Aotearoa composer Alex Taylor. Lauded as a "national treasure" by NZ Herald's William Dart, the Tūī award-winning NZTrio of Amalia Hall (violin), Ashley Brown (cello) and Somi Kim (piano) are renowned for their adventurous and eclectic repertoire, celebrating their 20th anniversary together this year. They'll be performing with Reid's trusty live band of Sam Taylor, Richie Pickard, Joe McCallum and of course the globally acclaimed songwriter herself for this trifecta of can't miss occasions.

Experience Reid and band live with NZTrio at the dates below, just ahead of her Auckland Town Hall performance with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra as part of Elemental Nights 2022, and keep your ear to the ground for news of a fourth studio album in 2023...

‘It was a dream I dreamt up while in the throes of having a newborn and being in lockdown once again. I have been wanting to perform with the NZTrio for as long as I can remember. And it seems like the perfect pairing as I prepare to record my 4th album in August. I think the marriage of my band and I, and NZTrio is going to make for some real magic and I can’t wait.’ - Nadia Reid

"A couple of years ago, we had the chance to hear Nadia and her band playing live in Christchurch. Since then we’d been thinking how great it would be to collaborate on a show together - the intimacy and emotional range of Nadia’s music aligns with NZTrio’s vibe and we thought the combination of the trio with her band would create an interesting new dimension. We’re so stoked to see this dream come to fruition! Alex Taylor is the perfect composer to have on the team - we’re all in for a treat and can’t wait to get on the road!" - NZTrio

Press release:

Off the back of her last two successful tours (Theatre & Opera House, 2021 and Reid & Ruins 2020) and on the eve of her fourth album release in 2023, Nadia Reid is going out on the road this July with her band and contemporary classical ensemble NZTrio.

A richness of voice; a depth of emotion; wisdom beyond her years, Nadia Reid has claimed her place as one of New Zealand’s most evocative and profound songwriters. With youth spent in the company of folk clubs and the indie scene of Dunedin and Christchurch, Reid connected with the pre-and-post-quake Christchurch music milieu and quickly garnered a reputation among her peers for her penetrating songs belying her young age.

Nadia Reid has attained global success off the back of her first three albums: Listen To Formation, Look For The Signs (2015); Preservation (2017); and Out Of My Province (2020). In the years prior to March 2020, Nadia performed over 90 shows a year, through Australasia, Europe, and the United States with high profile appearances at coveted arts and music festivals like Green Man, End Of The Road, a media appearance on the BBC’s ‘Later...with Jools Holland’ and BBC 6 music.

With a #2 in Mojo for Album of the Year (for Preservation in 2017), and in New Zealand, as a finalist for both the Silver Scrolls Awards (2017,2019) and the Taite Prize (2016 & 2018, 2020) Nadia Reid’s star continues to rise.

Described as a “national treasure” and “New Zealand’s most indispensable ensemble” (William Dart, NZ Herald), NZTrio is renowned for its eclectic repertoire, outstanding talent and warm kiwi stage presence, and celebrates their 20th anniversary in 2022. Any preconceptions of classical music being stuffy or intimidating are smashed by edgy repertoire, venue ambiance, and post-concert manaakitanga.

Bringing together three incredibly accomplished artists: Amalia Hall (violin), Ashley Brown (cello) and Somi Kim (piano), every NZTrio performance powerfully reaffirms the importance and cathartic nature of a live musical experience in today’s digital world. Expect to be affected.

Critical acclaim for the group extends to a Tui for Best Classical Artist at the 2017 Vodafone NZ Music Awards, two citation awards: the KBB Music/CANZ citation (2012) and the Lilburn Trust Citation (2017) – both for outstanding services to New Zealand Music, as well as an ever-expanding catalogue of recorded work including their latest album Merge, released in 2021 on the Rattle label.
