Listen To Kevin Morby's New Album 'This Is A Photograph'

Chris Cudby / Friday 13th May, 2022 10:50AM

Last in Aotearoa for a red hot ticket 2018 double headline date with fellow US songwriting star Waxahatchee, Kevin Morby launches today his seventh studio album This Is A Photograph. Initially sparked by the sudden collapse of his father in 2020, Morby embarked on something of a vision quest to create the new long player, meditating upon old family photos and drawing inspiration from the ghosts of such departed heroes as Jeff Buckley, Jay Reatard and Elvis — travelling to Memphis, walking along the banks of the Mississippi River, driving past Graceland to hit Highway 61. Recorded with Sam Cohen and a small legion of guest musicians in upstate New York and Memphis, the often Dylan-esque This Is A Photograph finds beauty in the weight of family history and musical tradition over twelve lushly recorded tracks. Morby unpacked the ideas bubbling through the title track...

“Sam Cohen and I wanted to throw everything at the wall with this one... It’s about the battle every family faces, that of chasing the clock, to live our lives and hold onto one another for as long as possible. That, and, the dreams that come with being a young family in America and where those dreams eventually end up.”

Comedy icon Tim Heidecker co-stars in the video for foot-stomper 'Rock Bottom'...

'This Is A Photograph' is out today on major streaming services via Dead Oceans — vinyl LP, cassette and CD orders available HERE.
