Listen To Violet French and The Horrible's Self-Titled EP
Ōtautahi's Violet French and bandmates The Horrible may claim to be 'Too Busy Crying', but the torrent of tears sure hasn’t interfered with their capacity to produce a stellar new record. Their eponymous EP drops today via Melted Ice Cream — a steady and energetic collection of guitar driven power-ballads, including a raucous reimagining of French’s 2020 fuzzy, lo-fi, bedroom banger ‘I Want The Sky To be Crying’.
Reminiscent of '90s / '00s alternative rock icons such as Hole or PJ Harvey and backlit by the legacy of Aotearoa legends Fur Patrol, French and friends have concocted an angsty collection of songs that wouldn’t feel out of place on the Lollapalooza ’99 stage. That’s not to say it is a record without variety. Following the playful waltz of ‘Too Much Waltz’ songwriting takes a slightly more macabre turn with the post-punk tinged ‘Unchecked Bagged’ which evokes the spectre of 80’s goth progenitors TSOL.
