Going South - A Night Of Dead Moon Announced ft. The Situations, Bloodbags + More

Celebrating the legendary fierce garage punk spirit of Portland, Oregon's Dead Moon, whose frontman Fred Cole passed away in 2017, a special tribute event is happening at Tāmaki Makaurau's UFO on 9th September. Starring avowed Dead Moon fanatics The Situations, Bloodbags, Jet Generations (featuring The D4's Jimmy Christmas) and The Tegel Chicken, Going South - A Night Of Dead Moon marks the launch of a newly unearthed live album recorded in Invercargill (by sound person Graham Bennett aka The Tegel Chicken) during the trailblazing US groups' first ever Aotearoa tour in 1992. Famously turning down a high profile support slot for Nirvana's Nevermind tour to tear it up down under, Dead Moon's epochal NZ visit is documented on strictly limited edition double vinyl LP (locally available later this year) — releasing beautifully in sync with the 30th anniversary of the mammoth 20 date run of shows...

“One of Fred's key rules was--never cancel a gig you committed to for a better one. Basic work ethic but important. Bottom line, we never regretted coming to NZ instead of doing the Nirvana show in the US, even though we never did get that chance again. That 1st NZ tour is still the one I remember as the most fun, sow your wild oats tour we ever did!” — Toody Cole

Press release:

Thirty years ago - in 1992 , Portland Oregon trio Dead Moon made their first visit to NZ in late August performing a whopping 20 shows. Turns out that after they confirmed NZ, Nirvana asked them to open shows for them on their first Nevermind tour, but Dead Moon kept their commitment to the country at the bottom of the world

On that trip they played all corners of Aotearoa to crowds of all sizes. For many of those people it was a life changing event with the then-unknown trio converting them to lifelong fans. Dead Moon's fiercely independent DIY attitude and execution was not lost on those who came to see this then-unknown group ... influencing many a NZ musician who witnessed those shows.

The tour hit Invercargill at the Glengarry Tavern on Saturday 5th September .. It was the first fully mic’d up show and was recorded to cassette by soundperson Graham Bennett AKA The Tegel Chicken. The whole show was captured and will be released on a double live LP on Saturday 10th Sept at a yet to be announced location in Titirangi, Auckland.

The Situations - Papakura's finest opened for Dead Moon in 2006 and later in 2018 with the Pierced Arrows: Bloodbags - Andrew Tolley was there for the first and subsequent tours (and he looks the same as he did back then!) , and Rapley and Sam are GIANTs when it comes to their love for all things Dead Moon: Jet Generations - Jimmy Christmas remembers vividly seeing Dead Moon perform Poor Born on their 1996 visit - and then in 1999 the D4 opened the shows on the Dead Moon tour; The Tegel Chicken in 1992 took leave from his regular gig at MacDonalds (where he still is today!) to tour manage and do F.O.H sound for the tour.

When the tour reached Invercargill , Tegel recorded the whole show and it wasn't until 2016 when it was rediscovered. Jump to 2022 and the Invercargill show will be released on a double live LP on Saturday 10th September at a yet-to-be-disclosed location in Titirangi ... The NZ edition on Electric Alchemy comes boxed with loads of goodies and in a run of 54 Boxes and subsequently 40 regular Lps. Mississippi records in Portland who take care of the stewardship of Dead Moon and Fred Cole recordings in the modern age will release for the Rest of The World with copies coming to NZ later in year. Flying Out distributes Mississippi in NZ. More info coming ..
