There's been some smashing Aotearoa music / software experiences unleashed over the past few weeks, including Animal Tracks (co-created by Stef Animal) and now The Beast Awakens, a full-blown RPG game from Te Whanganui-a-Tara extreme metal four piece Dark Divinity. Available to play over at Dark Divinity's site (you'll need to sign in for immediate access), The Beast Awakens is an immersive tribute to dungeon crawling classics of yore, intricately rendered in beautiful pixel artwork and navigable via an intuitive point and click interface that works great on laptop (I was using Chrome). During my brief first foray into the depths I explored a maze, solved a puzzle, fought a sinister librarian and a brutal Book Beast, found some potions, and expanded my party of adventurers with the addition of wizard Jesse from the Order Of Dark Divinity. Nailing the vibe with an evocative dungeon synth soundtrack, players of The Beast Awakens have the opportunity to unlock songs from Dark Divinity's forthcoming debut album Unholy Rapture as they progress — which releases in full on 22nd September.
