Ebony Lamb and Jess Cornelius Announce November Tour of Aotearoa

Ebony Lamb and Jess Cornelius Announce November Tour of Aotearoa

Chris Cudby / Friday 23rd September, 2022 8:36AM

Raised in Wellington, Jess Cornelius flew the coop to form Teeth & Tongue in Melbourne and is presently based in the US, where she's just wrapped up a run of shows supporting Ty Segall and recently toured with King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Cornelius returns to Aotearoa this November for the first time since the release of her 2020 album Distance — including contributions from Mary Lattimore, Molly Lewis, Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint) and more — playing a just-announced double-headline tour with fellow Te Whanganui-a-Tara songwriting luminary Ebony Lamb (Eb & Sparrow).

Clocking up the studio hours in 2022 and teasing a very exciting musical announcement for the near future, Lamb has put together a new all-wahine live band featuring Olivia Campion (Yumi Zouma) and Phoebe Johnson (Revulva) for the tour and beyond, while Cornelius will be playing as a duo with Mikal Cronin (who naturally call their collaborative work Cronelius) of Ty Segall's Freedom Band. It's certainly busy times ahead for Lamb, who is also performing nationwide with Tom Cunliffe this October (the smart move is of course: go see her twice), scope out the details for her gigs with Cornelius below...

Press release:

Ebony Lamb (the driving force behind Eb & Sparrow) and Jess Cornelius (NZ native, LA based, formerly Teeth & Tongue of Melbourne) are soaring out as a double headline across Aotearoa this November. Jess will be performing with Mikal Cronin (of Ty Segall's Freedom Band) and Ebony will debut her new all-wahine band comprising of musicians Olivia Campion (Yumi Zouma) and Phoebe Johnson (Revulva).

Jess Cornelius is travelling from LA to tour her homeland of Aotearoa, fresh off the back of a US tour with King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Her highly acclaimed album "Distance" was released in the throes of the pandemic, receiving glowing reviews from the likes of Pitchfork, MOJO, the Guardian, Rolling Stone, and NPR. With the help of producer Tony Buchen, Distance became a roving affair, recorded in a string of Los Angeles studios with delicate and emphatic contributions from the local music scene, including Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint), harpist Mary Lattimore, Emily Elhaj (Angel Olsen), Stephanie Drootin (Bright Eyes), Jesse Quebbeman-Turley (Hand Habits), whistler Molly Lewis, Justin Sullivan (Night Shop, Kevin Morby) and Laura Jean Anderson.

Now based in LA, Jess Cornelius was born and raised in New Zealand (her mother is Raewyn Atkinson, one of the countries most established ceramic artists) before moving to Melbourne, Australia, where she released three critically acclaimed albums as Teeth & Tongue, receiving nominations for the Australian Music Prize and a J-Award. Jess has performed the world over playing alongside Courtney Barnett, Ty Segall, J. Mascis, Juana Molina and Laura Marling, as well as multiple international Music festivals.

Ebony Lamb is genre-defying powerhouse with “a voice of woodsmoke and honey” (Nick Bollinger), a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter from Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington who was the driving force behind alt-country sweethearts Eb & Sparrow.

Renowned for her dynamic performance and audience rapport, her performances will offer a tantalising glimpse of the new work from her long awaited solo album, due out in 2023. Ebony inhabits a mystical soundscape that is both authentic and striking with every performance, a show not to be missed with “a depth and power that, in places, is equal to any current big name, from Gillian Welch to Cat Power” (Dompost Tom Cardy). Ebony has supported international and national acts such as Tiny Ruins, Nadia Reid, Marlon Williams, Beth Orton, Rodriguez, Bic Runga, Tami Neilson, The Warratahs and more.
