Terrible Sons Unveil Single 'Sunset Swimming' + Lyric Video

C.C. / Friday 23rd September, 2022 12:55PM

Husband and wife songwriting duo Terrible Sons, aka Lauren Barus (L.A. Mitchell) and Matt Barus, have unveiled the lead single from their forthcoming debut album, recorded in their Ōtautahi home studio with drummer / percussionist Jo McCullum (Nadia Reid, The Veils), producer / guitarist Tom Healy (Tiny Ruins, Marlon Williams) and bassist Jo Barus (The Dukes). Out today with a watercolour-washed lyric video, the tender melodies of and romantic lyrics of 'Sunset Swimming' conjure pleasant visions of off-the-beaten-path seaside summer sanctuaries. Terrible Sons will be touring their new ballad nationwide in November and early December, joined for their Te Ika-a-Māui shows by Rodney Fisher (Mixed vege, Goodshirt), and newcomer Hannah Everingham for the southern leg of their musical journey. Matt Barus opened up about the local inspiration for 'Sunset Swimming'...

"...(the song) comes with an image in my head of Te Rāpaki-o-Te Rakiwhakaputa, one of our favourite bays to swim at. It’s just over the Port Hills in Christchurch, through the tunnel. I’ve been going there for over twenty years. That’s a lot of accumulated memories, trekking over the path, with friends current and long gone. It’s got a grassy hill, like a small auditorium, that looks out over a sandy beach studded with pesky, sharp rocks. So many of our songs come from being by the water, we can’t keep the longing out of that.” — Matt Barus
