Listen To Shoddy's New Album 'Nocturns'

Chris Cudby / Wednesday 5th October, 2022 11:10AM

A new record can be both a journey and a destination, as evident by the winding pathways that lead us to Nocturns, the first official long player in three mad years from Tāmaki Makaurau's Shoddy. Including romping stomping earlier singles 'Seven Sins of Gorsetown' and 'Xmas Mock Meat Roast' along with a clutch of fresh tunes that defy easy definition, the foursome of Witchy Dugdale, Thomas Pembroke, Daniel Pickstone and Toby King serve up their own alchemical take on subterranean swamp / goth / glam / no wave / boogie with an almost ritualistic fervour. Lead vocalist and guitarist Witchy yowls "people are afraid to say 'I don't know'" on 'The Number where the Heart Should Be' as the band kick up a ruckus of sax, drums and tangled strings, conjuring twilight sonic realms for minds to roam within on 'Soothingsayer' (recalling the woozy ambience of recent Cate le Bon) and the strung out, chugging grooves of closer 'Better Living Everybody' — featuring the biting mantra 'The baby boomers bought us / so this is what they taught us" — tuck in below...

"Three year journey through a nocturnal maze, ruru are guardians that sing of place, as time has weaved we don't recognize the face, the sun as muse and belittled fate, we now externalize, the thought , the expression and the whole narrative of modern life and our relationship with it. Family is born, and we hold each together, as the holy gate."

'Nocturns' is out now on major streaming services.
