Here's Six: Jenny Don't and The Spurs Favourite Cover Songs

Kelly Halliburton / J.B. / C.C. / Tuesday 15th November, 2022 11:09AM

Journeying to Aotearoa for the very first time for headline dates at Tāmaki Makaurau's Whammy Backroom, Piha RSA and Kumeu Live (at Kumeu Arts), Portland cowpunk stars Jenny Don't & The Spurs are a rockin' and rollin', country / western live experience not to be missed. Prepping our ears for next week's gigs, the band's Kelly Halliburton (Pierced Arrows, P.R.O.B.L.E.M.S.) lifted the lid on some of their favourite tunes to cover live. Read our recent interview with Halliburton and front woman Jenny Don't (of garage punks DON'T) HERE, snap up tickets pronto, and soak up the timeless sounds and rich insights below...

'Three Or Four Nights' - Johnny Bond

We're big Johnny Bond fans...he was such a big personality with a great voice. I love his That Wild, Wicked But Wonderful West LP, and his hot rod songs are great. 'Three Or Four Nights' is one of his rockabilly hits, and it's usually a good crowd pleaser.

'Black Cadillac' - Sonny Wallace

About ten years ago Jenny's mom sent us a box of stuff from where she lives in New Mexico, and in it was this old 45 on the New Mexican label Yucca Records. We weren't familiar with the artist, Sonny Wallace, so we asked Jenny's mom.. ."Oh, Sonny? He's your cousin. He's been dead for a while, though..." We gave it a spin and it sounded great — excellent primitive rockabilly, right up our alley, released in 1960. We decided to do our version of the song on our last album. This is a real obscurity, and original copies of the single, like the one we got from Jenny's mom, go for big bucks among collectors. Luckily, Norton Records reissued the A-side as a split 7" with a Don Orr song a few years ago, so you might be able to score a copy.

'Still As The Night' - Sanford Clark

This is a great one in its original form. We could never hope to replicate Sanford Clark's sheer understated creepiness, but we hope we do the song some justice.

'Ladybird' - Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood

This is a classic that everyone should know, and we were lucky enough to get our old pal, the king of Portland Punk, Poison Idea's Jerry A, to do a duet with Jenny on our version of this one for its inclusion on our first album.

'Haunting Rhythm' - Romeo Sullivan

This one's a deep cut, and we recorded it for our newest 12", which should be released sometime early in the new year. Romeo was a longtime disc jockey in Alabama and released a small handful of good rockabilly / country singles, but this song was his first and best.

'Don't You Know' - Charlie Feathers

Who doesn't love Charlie Feathers — the crooning, hiccuping, howling unsung hero of raw, emotive rockabilly? This one's a mellow waltz-style for those nights when we want to see some couples dancing out there.
