Listen To Greta O'Leary's Debut EP 'Treasure Horse'
“Ahhh the horns”. This is verbatim what I exclaimed aloud around the two minute mark of 'Honey Babe', the second track of Pōneke alt-folk songsmith Greta O'Leary’s astounding debut EP Treasure Horse. Intimate storytelling and confessional prose are complimented by cinematic arrangements composed by O’Leary and manicured by the deft production team of Charlotte Yates and Toby Lloyd. Treasure Horse’s five songs sound as though they were thoroughly considered from concept to execution, with each afforded equal attention. The result is a sonically rich record which, whilst consistent in theme and quality, feels spontaneous and adventurous in its approach at moments where some songwriters would hold tight to the reins. The cantering, percussive desperation and squealing strings of 'Mountain Tip' conjure imagery of a rustic steam engine plowing through a valley bathed in golden light, spurred by urgency. ‘Body, Now’, an acoustic waterbed, lulls the listener all whilst a yearning cello subtly builds intensity up to its disquieting climax.
O'Leary’s voice is imbued with earthy, smokey tones reminiscent of a hāngī pit, giving the impression that below the serene melodies lies an intense, longing heat that can no longer stand to be buried. Sometimes sultry, at other times fierce, her timbre weaves between the elements of her compositions in a manner which enhances the piece as a whole. Touring her new EP nationwide this month and next, if you fancy slapping the stirrups on O'Leary's Treasure Horse, you can listen here...
