As my good friends — the old codgers in the Mainland Cheese ads from the mid-'00s — always said: “Good Things Take Time”. Tāmaki Makaurau’s soul-pop songwriter Christabel (aka Christabel Williams) has held true to this philosophy in crafting her lovelorn new single ‘Someone Else’. A song born amidst a flurry of emotions stirred up when retrospectively examining a past relationship, Christabel spent five years grasping for the right words to capture their rueful complexity with justice. Like riding on a bus with a dying engine, Christabel describes the fading embers of a connection, the dawning realisation that there’s just not enough life to propel things forward, accepting one must disembark and walk to their destination alone.

‘Someone Else’ is proof of healing, a bittersweet pop eulogy to a spark still faintly etched into the retina of the mind’s eye. The single's accompanying video made with support from NZ On Air, shot by the artist, Steffan Haavik Taylor and Luca Turner during jaunts around London with beloved friends, feels like a jubilant victory lap celebrating the growth sprouted by the accommodation of hard-won lessons.
